Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail Challenge 2023/24 – Opening Ceremony Press Release
Fourth Edition of the Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail Challenge begins
[HONG KONG, 18 Nov 2023] The fourth edition of the “Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail Challenge 2023/24,” co-hosted by Parks and Trails, TrailWatch, iDiscover, and Designing Hong Kong, has commenced today and will continue until January 15th, 2024. The opening ceremony featured distinguished guests including Mr. Paul Zimmerman, CEO of Designing Hong Kong, Ms. Agnes Cheng, CEO of Parks and Trails, and Jonathan Gilchrist, last year’s champion of the challenge.
Paul Zimmerman, CEO of Designing Hong Kong excitedly stated, “We are thrilled that the government has adopted our proposal for a continuous pedestrian link around Hong Kong island. As it is near to the shore, the path can be used by many people, young and old.”
Agnes Cheng, CEO of Parks and Trails remarked, “Participants embarking on the 65km journey of the Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail will encounter stunning coastal vistas, cultural heritage sites, and natural landscapes, sure to make for an unforgettable experience. Additionally, this event acts as a fundraiser for Parks and Trails, participants can contribute to nature conservation while savoring its beauty.”
Last year’s challenge attracted over 1,200 participants, with more than 500 completing the entire 65 km loop. This year’s challenge retains its two-category format: Leisure and Racing.
Leisure category participants have the flexibility to explore the eight segments of the coastal trail at their leisure, using the TrailWatch Event mobile app to complete interactive quizzes throughout the duration of the event. The Racing category offers avid runners a virtual competition across three distances: a 15km Harbourfront Run, a 25 km Hill Run, and a 65 km Coastal Run, catering to those with a competitive spirit.
The Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail Challenge 2023/24 serves as a fundraising initiative for Parks and Trails, with proceeds supporting environmental conservation programs in Hong Kong, such as the TrailWatch hiking app serving over 200,000 locals, the trail-cleaning “Waste Audit” program, and “Accessible Hiking” events enabling wheelchair users to connect with nature, all dedicated to bonding the community with the natural world for collective preservation efforts.
