Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail Challenge 2022-23 – Opening Ceremony Press Release
The Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail Challenge (‘The Challenge’ for short) is back for its third edition! The charity event, co-organised by three local NGOs—Designing Hong Kong, iDiscover and Parks & Trails—and powered by TrailWatch, invites everyone to join either the Racing event or the Leisure event to hike or run (parts of) the 65-km-long Coastal Trail loop around Hong Kong Island from December 1, 2022, to January 31, 2023.
Opening Ceremony
The event kicked off on December 3 with an opening ceremony at Museum Café 8.
“We are delighted that the Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail has made it into the Policy Address this year,” thus Paul Zimmerman, CEO of Designing Hong Kong. “We trust that with the Government’s input, we can improve the trail and fix any missing links as soon as possible. The Hong Kong Island Coastal Trail connects the many assets of our city— from urban to natural shores—and everyone, young and old, can enjoy it.”
“The Hong Kong Maritime Museum focuses on the maritime history and heritage of Hong Kong in coastal, regional, and global waters,” Prof. Joost Schokkenbroek, Museum Director of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, stated at the opening event. “Hence, as an important educational institution on the trail, we happily support this fabulous initiative and hope to attract many people to participate and enjoy the beauty of our habitat,” he continued.
Hong Kong Coastal Trail Challenge 2022-23 Event Ambassador John Hui added, “The Event is a unique combination of getting to challenge yourself and having fun, as well as community exploration of Hong Kong Island. I’m excited to be a part of this, and I encourage everyone to sign up with me!”
Connecting well-known routes, small paths and lost tracks, the Coastal Trail is a fascinating journey around Hong Kong Island’s coastline. The 65-km-long trail is divided into 8 stages, from easy to moderate in difficulty and from steep, remote mountain climbs to flat urban harbourside walks. The Challenge aims to promote urban walkability, access to nature and heritage, healthy, sustainable living and responsible travel. It also seeks to enable the community to become cultural and environmental ambassadors.
